Base of Lower Falls

Grand Prismatic

The Lower Falls mark the beginning of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. These falls are a popular stop for many tour groups travelling through Yellowstone National Park every year. Many views of the largest waterfall in the park are less accessable than others and require a bit of walking, climbing, and sometimes nerves of steel. There is a path that takes daring visitors to the river just down the river from the base of the falls. This path, however, includes many steep steps down the side of the mountain. These steps are perforated metal that allow a great view below and are bolted to the side of fractured rocks hundreds of feet above the ground. The view from the bottom is magnificent. It is hard to get a grasp on the true size of the fall until you realize there is a group of visitors at the brink of the falls just to the right.
