One of Kansas City's icons, The Scout, looks over downtown from Penn Valley Park. It is a depiction of a Sioux Indian surveying the landscape from horseback. In 1915 it was temporarily installed in the park where it now sits. It was such a popular piece, the citizens of Kansas City formed "The Kids of Kansas City" campaign and with nickels and dimes they raised $15,000 to purchase it. Today it looks over what was once open praries inhabited by Native Americans. Much has changed since then.
