Kansas City's Liberty Memorial houses the National World War I Museum. The Great Frieze, located on the northern wall of the memorial, spans 488 feet and measures 48 feet tall. It is one of the largest sculptures in the area. It depicts the progression of man from war to peace. Throughout the piece, the figures are rich in symbolism. This is the very center of the carving. It symbolizes the end of war and beginning of peace. To the left of the angel are soldiers mourning the loss of their fallen friends. The angel holds the sword from war on the right side of the sculpture. In her other hand she holds a plant to help regrow and rebuild the nation. The men on the right side are no longer carrying tools of war, but tools of peace. They are ready to help rebuild and get back to a life without war. |
