One day, on the west side of Yellowstone National Park, we pulled off to the side of the road where a small crowd was beginning to gather. That usually means something has been spotted. Sure enough, next to a pond in the middle of a large field, was a group of bighorn sheep. Coming in from the east, a coyote crouched in the grass was closing in. The sheep continued drinking from the pond unaware of the impending danger. Suddenly one of the sheep spotted the coyote and the race was on. Even though the coyote was smaller than any of the sheep, the entire herd started running directly towards us. The entire group of bystanders started to panic, but a park ranger was among the crowd and told us to just stay standing where we were and not move. Sure enough the sheep shuffled through the people within inches paying no attention to us. When they got to the other side of the road they stared far across the field at the dejected coyote. The one out front was the designated lookout.
